HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - An engineering firm is asking Hattiesburg leaders to approve a site for a new wastewater treatment plant.

The Hattiesburg American reports (https://hatne.ws/1yW8Fl1 ) Neel-Schaffer engineer-manager Nathan Husman asked city council and Mayor Johnny DuPree to approve two sites as options for the plant.

Husman, however, is focusing on a primary site located on city-owned land just north of the eastern-most lagoon cell. The city council will study the proposal.

The projected cost to prepare the site for eventual construction of the facility: $23.5 million.

Husman told officials that he would return on March 2 with the total project costs, including selection of a specific treatment process and construction of the treatment facility.

In January, Husman said the industry estimate for a mechanical plant that could process an average 18 million gallons a day, which is what the city has asked for, runs about $160 million nationwide.

Husman said if the project continues to move forward at this pace, council would be asked to sign off on a treatment option in April, with construction bids being let by the summer.

Long-term discharge of polluted wastewater has landed the city under a federal consent order. The city is required to have a treatment facility under construction by May 1, 2016, and operational by May 1, 2018.
