JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - A Wasilla Republican wants to require that the University of Alaska Board of Regents include members from throughout the state.

Rep. Lynn Gattis has proposed legislation that would require that the board includes a member from the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Municipality of Anchorage, Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Kenai Peninsula Borough, City and Borough of Juneau, a community not connected to the rest of the state by road or rail, a student and four at-large members.

Currently, the board has ten at-large regents and one student regent. According to a statement from Gattis, few regents have lived in the Matanuska-Susitna or Kenai Peninsula boroughs.

The bill’s first committee of referral is the House Education Committee. Rep. Wes Keller, the chair of that committee, has signed on as a co-sponsor.
