BAY SHORE, N.Y. (AP) - Police on Long Island are investigating after an officer responding to a report that a dog was being kept in a cold yard shot and wounded the animal.

The dog, a 9-year-old pit bull named Black, was recovering after the bullet shattered its teeth, broke its jaw and caused some tissue damage.

Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/1MBEwSi ) says the dog’s owner had left Black fenced in a yard in Bay Shore last Sunday. Police received a call that the animal had been tied to a tree in the yard. They say Black was shot when it charged an officer.

It was not clear whether the officer attempted to contact the homeowners before entering the yard.

Suffolk County police say there is no standard procedure for calls about the welfare of a dog.
