PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Gina Raimondo says she consulted with labor leaders before deciding to appoint a union official to head the state Department of Transportation.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1E95a1n ) that Raimondo said Wednesday that labor leaders consulted included one or more from the Laborers International Union of North America.
The governor said she consulted with Michael Sabitoni, president of the Rhode Island Building and Construction Trades Council and business manager of the Rhode Island Laborers District Council. He served on her transition team.
She says many people helped.
Peter Alviti, a former Cranston public works director who works for an arm of the Laborers union, was appointed to head the agency. He’s a former public works director in Cranston and has been the program director for the New England Laborers Health and Safety Fund.
