VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - A mosaic on the scale of “pretty interesting” and “not your typical landscape” will be unveiled this summer at the new expansion of Central Park Plaza.

The mosaic will be part of the plaza’s new pavilion and ice rink. The two-sectioned mosaic will be 17 feet tall and 12 feet wide. Named “Seedpods to Snowflakes” to reflect the four seasons visitors can enjoy the pavilion, the mosaic features a nine-foot tall dragonfly made of stained glass as well as nine-foot tall snowflakes.

“In my design my intention was to make you feel childlike or even fairy-sized,” said the mosaic’s artist, Julia Sowles-Barlow.

Sowles-Barlow, of Griffith, was commissioned for the project by the Chicago Public Art Group where she has worked for 20 years. The project is sponsored by Tri Kappa, whose members have been assisting Sowles-Barlow in creating the mosaic.

“Culture is one of the missions of Tri Kappa and the idea of making a piece of public artwork for Valparaiso has been appealing to us for some time,” Linda Eyermann, Tri Kappa’s chairwoman of the Art Committee, told The Times in Munster (https://bit.ly/1CMQRv2 ).

Eyermann said the mosaic represents the four seasons because the park will be used year-round.

“This artwork will reflect that,” she said.

Working under the watchful eye of Sowles-Barlow, Tri Kappa volunteers, along with children from the Valparaiso Boys & Girls Club, have been making snowflakes.

“We serve as assistants,” Eyermann said.

Eyermann said the mosaic is a Tri Kappa project, but they are partnership with the Chicago Public Art Group and the Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission.

“The Valparaiso RDC’s art advisory committee has provided additional funding toward this mosaic,” Eyermann said. “We were able to make it larger than what we could have done alone.”
