LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A homeless man found on the steps of a Louisville shelter in the midst of sub-zero temperatures has died at a hospital.

St. John Center director Maria Price says Kenneth Winfield was discovered on the steps of the shelter some time Thursday night. He was taken to University Hospital, where he died.

The Courier-Journal reports (https://cjky.it/1w6BnFp ) the 49-year-old Winfield had been homeless for years and had battled mental illness and substance abuse. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said Friday the cause of death was not yet known.

Price says Winfield had applied for a federal supportive housing program that provides a rent voucher, counseling and social service support, but he wasn’t approved for it.

She says Winfield had used the services at St. John’s for at least four years.
