DETROIT (AP) - A 35-year-old Detroit man has been charged in the slaying of an off-duty police officer who was a U.S. Army veteran.

Walter Jennings was arraigned Monday on first-degree murder and gun charges in the fatal shooting of Roderick Jones early Saturday outside a Detroit bar.

The 33-year-old Jones was a reserve officer with the Highland Park Police Department and was working as a security guard at the Opyum Lounge. Authorities say he was shot multiple times after telling a man to leave the bar. Jones later died at a nearby hospital.

The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says Jennings has no listed defense attorney. He was ordered held in the Wayne County Jail. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Feb. 17 and a preliminary examination for Feb. 23.
