PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix man has been sentenced to natural life in prison in the 2010 death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 28-year-old Walter Munoz was sentenced Monday for first-degree murder.

Munoz previously pleaded guilty to the killing of Daniel Resendiz at a west Phoenix apartment complex.

The boy’s mother made statements to police that led to Munoz’s arrest.

Court records show Munoz told police he was drunk on Oct. 30, 2010, when he tripped over the boy in an apartment.

Records show that Munoz then started to bite the toddler and beat him with his fists until the boy died.

When the mother returned home, Munoz told her something was wrong with the child.

The mother grabbed the boy and ran across the street to call 911.
