PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - Work will begin soon on the renovation of a historic Petersburg depot into a National Park Service visitors center.

Media outlets report that a ceremony marking the start of the project was held Monday at the South Side Depot. Work on the first phase is scheduled to begin in the next two weeks and be completed in May.

The depot was built in 1854 and served the South Side Railroad. During the Civil War, Confederates used the station to receive supplies during the siege of Petersburg.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is providing $650,000 in grants for the project’s first phase. Another $100,000 in matching funds will be provided by the Civil War Trust.
