EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Defense attorneys for an Evansville man accused of starting a deadly March fire have asked a judge to keep statements he made to police from being used at trial.
Christopher Compton faces murder and arson charges after a March blaze left three people dead. The Evansville Courier and Press reports (https://bit.ly/1sBW1ey ) the 32-year-old man’s attorney asked a judge Wednesday to omit statements Compton made to police because they came after he asked for a lawyer. Prosecutors argue police took the proper steps to make sure the interview was conducted correctly.
Compton’s attorneys say they will pursue a defense of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect at his March 30 trial.
Victims of the blaze included 3-year-old Jazmine Jones; her 28-year-old mother, Keri Jones; and 76-year-old Donald Lankford.
