ODESSA, Texas (AP) - The hospital treating victims of a deadly prison bus crash in West Texas says it’s following policy in not allowing the inmates’ relatives to visit them.

Medical Center Hospital spokeswoman Tiffany Harston says the policy holds for any inmate who comes for treatment, not just the four injured in Wednesday’s wreck.

The accident killed eight inmates and two veteran prison department officers.

The bus was traveling from Abilene to El Paso when it skidded off an icy interstate overpass and collided with a Union Pacific freight train.

Officials say the prisoners didn’t have seat belts and were handcuffed together in pairs. Some were ejected from the bus after it struck the train.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the crash.
