HOUSTON (AP) - The city of Houston is promising refunds after overcharging more than 240,000 water customers by $25 million in total.

The Houston Chronicle (https://bit.ly/1x3H9SP ) reports the mistake is a result of Public Works and Engineering Department officials twice shifting late fees in a little more than a year.

Around 80 percent of all affected accounts will receive credits of $50 or less. The average single-family homeowner will get about $16.

City officials think all customers affected will be credited by the end of the month. Mayor Annise Parker says the issue has been corrected and won’t have an impact on city operations.
