ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York lawmakers have proposed funding bulletproof glass for police cars in New York City.
Assemblyman Felix Ortiz, a Brooklyn Democrat, says the legislation has bipartisan support and is an important safety measure and first step in improving conditions for police following last month’s shooting death of two officers sitting in their patrol car.
The bill would phase in installation of the glass over five years from a new police protection fund.
Legislators propose using some of the $5 billion the state recently received in bank settlements.
Republican Sens. Martin Golden of Brookyn and Philip Boyle of Long Island have introduced the bill in the Senate.
