SCHUYLER, Neb. (AP) - The attorney for a Schuyler man charged with stabbing a woman says his client will plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

The Columbus Telegram reports (https://bit.ly/1wghMMf ) that Amauri Herrera-Alvarez will undergo evaluation to determine whether he was sane in November when the woman was attacked. The 41-year-old is charged with attempted murder and use of a weapon.

The Colfax County Attorney’s office says the incident was discovered around 2:15 a.m. on Nov. 2 outside a Schuyler apartment building. Officers say they cut a rope Herrera-Alvarez was using to hang himself from a tree outside the building. Inside the building they found a 34-year-old woman who’d been stabbed.

Authorities say Herrera-Alvarez and the woman were in a relationship.
