PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say a Phoenix man has been arrested in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s 17-month-old daughter.
Phoenix police say 26-year-old Adrian Vincent Moreno was taken into custody Friday on suspicion of child abuse.
They say Amelia Gutierrez died Thursday.
Police were called to an apartment Tuesday night about an injured child and met with Moreno and the child’s mother.
They say the details the adults provided were inconsistent with the injuries the officers observed.
The child was transported to a hospital where it was determined she had suffered severe head and internal injuries.
Police say the girl’s mother left her in Moreno’s care while she went to the store.
The woman says Moreno called her later to say the child was injured after falling from the couch.
