LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is offering free screening for varicose veins at the UAMS Vascular Lab on Jan. 31.

About 25 million Americans have varicose veins, the leading cause of which are “leaky” valves in veins running from ankle to groin. Though age and gender are factors, the condition can affect anyone and worsen if left untreated.

The screening is led by UAMS vascular surgeon Dr. Ahsan Ali. Ali says many people believe varicose veins are a cosmetic issue and that nothing can be done about them. But varicose veins can sometimes progress to a more serious disease with symptoms that include pain, swelling, restlessness and ulcers.

Ali says new treatments are giving people with varicose veins new options to improve quality of life without major procedures.
