COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Former South Carolina Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill has a new job as director of the state’s Office on Aging.

McGill told The State newspaper (https://bit.ly/1z9PJ7k ) that Republican Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster asked him to take the job with a $122,000 salary.

McGill was a 26-year veteran of the Senate when he became lieutenant governor last June. The Kingstree Democrat volunteered for the job after the chamber’s Republican leaders were unwilling to temporarily fill the vacancy created by Glenn McConnell’s resignation.

McGill became the first Democrat in the No. 2 spot in two decades. He knew he would serve only until the winner of November’s election took over.

Overseeing the Office on Aging is one of the few required duties of the lieutenant governor, who makes $47,000 a year by law.
