TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords will co-chair a fundraising effort for a permanent memorial honoring victims of the deadly January 2011 Tucson shooting that left her wounded.
The January 8 Memorial Foundation announced Wednesday that Giffords will serve as honorary co-chair of the campaign, which is aiming to raise $4 million.
In a statement, Giffords says a permanent memorial will inspire generations to help make the lives of others better.
Jim Click Jr., co-owner of a Tucson automotive dealer group, has also been named a co-chair.
Foundation officials say funds would go toward a memorial in Tucson’s El Presidio Park and one in the Pima County Courthouse. They say funding is also needed for a website that will contain oral histories as told by survivors and first responders.
