WAGONER, Okla. (AP) - Officials in a northeastern Oklahoma county are warning residents to beware of a caller scam in which a man poses as a sheriff’s office investigator and threatens arrest if money isn’t sent to him.

The Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office says it has received reports of someone calling residents and identifying himself as Investigator Parker.

Maj. Gary Handley says the man creates fake stories about bogus checks and demands money.

The sheriff’s office emphasizes that deputies never try to collect funds from the public. It also says the person behind the scam could be using other names besides Investigator Parker.

Handley says anyone who receives such calls should notify authorities.
