SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Residential fires are more common in the winter, but this season is off to a particularly troubling start in the Springfield area.

The Springfield News-Leader (https://sgfnow.co/1AoYusJ ) reports that 22 residential structure fires occurred in December, up from 16 the previous December.

The fires are also creating a need for more assistance from the American Red Cross. The Red Cross of Southern Missouri says it provided fire relief aid to 41 Greene County residents last month, nearly three times as many as in December 2013.

Don Underwood of the Red Cross says the agency is seeking more volunteers for its Disaster Assistance Team.
