DALE, S.C. (AP) - Beaufort County deputies say an 18-year-old man they originally planned to charge with murder has now been released.

The sheriff’s office sent out a news release Thursday afternoon saying the teen had been charged with murder. But several hours later they sent out a second release saying a murder warrant was never served.

Deputies now say the teen is a person of interest in the death of 18-year-old William Major.

Major was shot several times outside a home around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday and tried to drive away, but only made it to a church down the road in Dale. He died before he got to the hospital.

Deputies haven’t released what they think led to the shooting.
