SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Salt Lake City man will spend at least two years in prison for fatally shooting another man at a party in 2012.

But 24-year-old Phillip Lucero could spend up to 20 years behind bars under the sentence he received Thursday in Utah’s Third District Court.

Judge Randall Skanchy told Lucero to make the best of the circumstance.

Lucero had pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of felony manslaughter in the death of 20-year-old Valentin Sigala Jr. Police say the two were fighting when Lucero shot Sigala in the chest.

The Salt Lake Tribune (https://bit.ly/1FzjLpm ) reports that Lucero’s attorneys characterized the shooting as a tragic accident. Prosecutors and Sigala’s family disagreed.
