SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Mayors and city officials along Utah’s heavily populated Wasatch Front are urging county officials to ask voters to consider a sales tax increase to help pay for transportation.
Cameron Diehl with the Utah League of Cities and Towns said Wednesday that officials from more than 50 cities appeared at county commission meetings in Salt Lake, Weber, Davis and Utah counties Tuesday to lobby for the effort.
The Utah Transportation Coalition, a partnership with the league and other groups, organized the effort.
A state law passed earlier this year gives counties the option of raising local sales taxes .25 percent.
Counties have to decide by mid-August if they’ll put the issue before voters in November.
If voters approve the tax increases, the revenue will be split among cities, counties and the Utah Transit Authority.
