NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) - The Natchez Civil Service Commission has narrowed the list of applicants for fire chief to six.
Twenty people applied for the position. The final six include three Natchez Fire Department employees.
Natchez Mayor Butch Brown tells The Natchez Democrat (https://bit.ly/1f1eGv4 ) that he and the board of aldermen will begin interviewing the six applicants Tuesday. Brown hopes to have a new fire chief hired by July 14.
While the city is without a fire chief, Brown said the department will be led by its four battalion chiefs - David Williams, Chris Gibson, Aaron Welsey and Leyland Rymer.
Oliver Stewart served as the city’s previous fire chief. Stewart retired Tuesday after 35 years of service to the Natchez Fire Department.
