MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A special election will decide who succeeds an Athens state lawmaker who recently died of leukemia.

State. Rep. Dan Williams died July 1.

Gov. Robert Bentley this week called for a special election to fill Williams’ seat.



Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1eMKdjw ) a special primary election will be held Sept. 29. The general election will be set for Dec. 8 or Feb. 16, depending on whether a primary runoff is necessary.

Candidates for major political parties must qualify by July 27. The parties must certify their candidates to the Secretary of State’s office by July 29.

Third-party, independent and minor-party candidates seeking ballot access must file their notifications and paperwork to the state by Sept. 29.
