TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Nogales man has been sentenced to more than six years in federal prison for a fraudulent tax refund scheme.
Prosecutors say 43-year-old Scott William Acorn was given a 78-month prison term by a U.S. District Court judge in Tucson and also ordered to pay $415,000 in restitution.
Acorn pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy, filing false claim for refund, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Prosecutors say Acorn and co-defendant acquired personal identification information of nearly 1,200 people.
They then electronically filed false tax returns for those people seeking refunds of about $1,000 on each return for tax years 2010 and 2011.
Authorities say the people whose information was used were unaware of the returns being filed in their name.
