KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Kansas City police say an officer has fatally shot a man who was wielding a sword in a park.

The Kansas City Star (https://bit.ly/1UOdaMP ) reports that police on Friday identified the man who died as 21-year-old Javon Hawkins, of Kansas City. He was shot Thursday and died later at a hospital.

Police said the officer went to the park after receiving a report that Hawkins was swinging the sword at passers-by and vehicles. Capt. Tye Grant, a police spokesman, said Hawkins was told to put down the sword but refused. Grant said the officer felt threatened and shot the man in the torso.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is standard procedure, so authorities can investigate.
