ASHLEY, N.D. (AP) - The State Historical Society of North Dakota is holding a public meeting in Ashley to gather comments about the management and promotion of the Lawrence Welk homestead outside of Strasburg.

The Tuesday meeting is at 6 p.m. at the Shed Cafe and Bar in Ashley.

The Legislature two years ago included $100,000 in the Historical Society’s budget to buy the boyhood home of the famous band leader and turn the 6-acre site into a state historic site. Earlier this year, lawmakers agreed to pay $50,000 annually for maintenance and other costs at the home.

“The Lawrence Welk Show” ran from 1951 to 1982, featuring what became known as “champagne music.” Welk died in 1992.
