FARMINGTON, N.M. (AP) - Authorities in San Juan County say a Flora Vista woman is in stable condition after being stabbed 24 times and a suspect is in custody.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office says detectives arrested A.J. Diaz late Friday on attempted first-degree murder, evidence tampering and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.

Deputies and paramedics responded Thursday to reports of a wounded woman who fell out of a vehicle.

Lt. Kyle Lincoln says Farmington police later found the 37-year-old victim’s vehicle abandoned in an intersection.

Sheriff’s detectives identified Diaz as a person of interest and found him at his mother’s house.

According to Lincoln, Diaz admitted to stabbing the victim while robbing her and taking her vehicle and phone to elude capture.

It was not known if Diaz had an attorney.
