CLEVELAND, Miss. (AP) - The city of Cleveland wants to annex land along U.S. Highway 61 north, area along Mississippi Highway 8 east and west and the area around the local airport.

Mayor Billy Nowell tells The Bolivar Commercial (https://bit.ly/1IaU6Vy ) that most of the area is already served by the city’s water system.

Nowell says local property owners will also benefit from city garbage collection, mosquito control and city fire and police protection.

A hearing is scheduled on the annexation petition on Wednesday at the Bolivar County courthouse in Cleveland.

Nowell says Cleveland needs space to expand housing opportunities and provide for business growth.

Nowell says the nearby towns of Boyle and Renova were notified of the petition.
