ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - State officials say $50 million is now available to local governments for water and sewer system upgrades.

The Environmental Facilities Corp. and Department of Health say it’s the first installment in recently enacted legislation that will provide $75 million in similar grants each of the next two years.

The corporation also offers billions of dollars in interest-free loans for municipal sewer and water projects.

Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker says most New Yorkers get drinking water from public supply systems.

He says the grants are intended to help ensure future generations also have clean drinking water.
