FAIRDALE, Ill. (AP) - The tornado-struck small northern Illinois town of Fairdale has been rezoned to help with rebuilding efforts.

The DeKalb County Board and Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the rezoning. The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1f57FsX) that started Thursday, Fairdale residents can pick up building permits and rebuild under the new specifications.

The April 9 tornado caused $7.9 million in damages to dozens of properties in the unincorporated community of about 150 people. Only 25 houses withstood the storm.

Bill Nicklas is president of the DeKalb County Long-Term Recovery Corporation. He says as many as 50 of the 66 damaged Fairdale residences will be rebuilt.

Rezoning eases restrictions if residents decide to rebuild. Many of the houses in Fairdale were in place before county zoning was established in 1948.
