WHITTIER, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials say a deputy shot and killed an apparently drunk man who struck him with a metal bar in Whittier.

Deputy Trina Schrader says family members called authorities to a residence late Wednesday reporting a man who had been arguing and damaging property.

Schrader says when deputies arrived, the suspect threatened to bash their heads in while swinging the metal bar.

One deputy was struck on the arm and he opened fire, hitting the suspect in the upper torso. The man later died.

The injured deputy was hospitalized for injuries to his left arm.

The 47-year-old suspect was not immediately identified.
