FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - Flagstaff police are stepping up enforcement of bicycle safety laws.
Many Flagstaff residents and students travel around the city on bicycles. Traffic can get congested when motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians share the same space.
Nearly 30 accidents occurred in a three-month span last year involving bicycles and vehicles. Flagstaff police say they were about equally at fault.
Police say they’ll begin a safety initiative Saturday to remind people what Arizona law says about bicycling. Bicyclists have to follow the same traffic laws as motorists. They also are required to have a light or reflector when traveling at night.
A city ordinance makes it illegal for anyone under 18 to ride a bicycle without a protective helmet.
Registering a bike costs $2.
