ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AP) - A college student accused of killing her newborn baby in April has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Emile Weaver entered the plea Wednesday in Muskingum County Common Pleas Court. She’s charged with aggravated murder, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.
Prosecutors say the 20-year-old college sophomore was indicted last week on charges that she put her newborn daughter in a plastic bag and left her to die. Authorities say the body was found April 22 in a garbage bag near a university-owned sorority house at Muskingum University.
The coroner ruled that the infant died from asphyxiation.
The Clarington woman is being held in Muskingum County jail on $1 million bond.
Weaver’s attorney didn’t return a call to the Zanesville Times Recorder seeking comment.
