TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - For the second time in five months, the state has fined a Tacoma recycling company for spilling toxic waste.

The News Tribune newspaper reports (https://is.gd/yhw1kE ) the state Department of Ecology has investigated 19 incidents at Emerald Services since February 2014.

The most recent penalty came in April for $68,000. State officials said the spillage of about 100 gallons of a “dangerous waste solvent” was the result of employee error at the facility on the Tacoma tideflats.

Emerald Services is appealing the fine.

This story has been corrected to show that the spill was at the facility, not into Commencement Bay.
