DETROIT (AP) - Officials in Detroit are working on a municipal identification card program that would offer better access to some city services for the homeless, immigrants, senior citizens and young people.

Details of the program were released Friday by members of the City Council.

The cards would be issued by the city to people who have trouble getting driver’s licenses or other forms of government identification that show where they live. The cards would help users qualify for things like library cards or get access to services like those offered by city recreation departments.

Officials hope to have the program available in six to nine months.

Similar programs have been started in New Haven, Connecticut, San Francisco and New York. Washtenaw County, west of Detroit, started its program last year.
