CHICAGO (AP) - Three Chicago Red Stars players are on the U.S. women’s soccer team that won the World Cup and the city is celebrating.

Shannon Boxx, Lori Chalupny and Christen Press are part of the team that defeated Japan 5-2 on Sunday to win the World Cup. In Chicago, fans gathered in Lincoln Park to watch the game on a jumbo screen.

Soccer fan Stefanie Rudd of Chicago was at the park. The 35-year-old says she can’t wait for the players to come home “so we can celebrate that victory.” And 25-year-old Chicago soccer fan Logan Davis says the players are “phenomenal” and the fans want to support them.

The Chicago players also earned kudos from U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, who says the Chicago Red Stars players “have made the state of Illinois proud.”
