LOS ANGELES (AP) - A man who died while trapped in a burning Los Angeles home was a beloved local poet and musician whose housemates say he helped them survive the blaze.

The Los Angeles Times reports Tuesday that Sammy Winston, well-known in the music scene around the Echo Park neighborhood, was the man killed in the fire that also left five people injured.

His housemate Wrecks Brixton, whose twin brother and bandmate B.G. Brixton also lives in the house, tells KCBS-TV he was able to survive because Winston ran inside to wake him.

There was no word on what caused the Fourth of July fire in the one-story home with a converted attic.

Several record stores and music venues in the area are raising money for the survivors and their families.
