HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Hattiesburg councilmen want to take a closer look at upgraded pay scales for city employees before considering possible pay raises for them.

The Hattiesburg American reports (https://hatne.ws/1dLEEAU ) the council voted Tuesday to delay accepting the recently submitted ranges after questions and concerns were raised of their accuracy.

Hattiesburg firefighter Terry Lawson told council members Monday that the new table remained inaccurate because it did not reflect career development money nor offer any explanation how employees could move within a given employee grade.

The pay issue quietly has been brewing since 2008, which officials say is the last time the pay scale table included in the so-called “HAVPAY” ordinance was updated.
