LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State Police say five people lost their lives in separate traffic crashes during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The agency says the preliminary numbers are down from 12 deaths in 11 traffic crashes during the 2014 Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The 2015 Fourth of July holiday weekend period ran from 6 p.m. July 2 through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

State police say they’re trying to help cut down on traffic deaths by encouraging seat belt use and stepping up patrols to curb drunken driving.
