A Texas man died Tuesday after shooting a firework off of his chest, according to Colorado County sheriff’s officials.

Justin Bartek, a 30-year-old veteran postal worker, died at Columbus Community Hospital on Tuesday, a local NBC affiliate reported.

“He just had an infectious spirit, whenever you met him you met a friend,” his friend, Erica Jackson, told the station.

Sheriff’s officials said Mr. Bartek and friends were shooting off fireworks at a popular fishing spot on the Colorado River. Mr. Bartek lit one of the fireworks on his chest and was critically injured when it went off, sheriff’s officials said. He died after he was rushed to the hospital by paramedics, ABC reported.

He leaves behind a 3-year-old son.

“He was here yesterday smiling and talking to everyone and saying, ‘Hi,’” Ms. Jackson said. “And today you get the sad news that he’s just not here.”

Mr. Bartek is the second person this month to die while launching a firework off of his body. A 22-year-old Maine man was killed instantly over the weekend after lighting a firework on his head.
