BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A Billings woman has pleaded guilty to charges she killed her infant son and injured his twin sister.

Kayla Jean Edwards, 24, pleaded guilty Thursday to deliberate homicide and assault on a minor, The Billings Gazette (https://bit.ly/1MiRd2N ) reports.

Prosecutors alleged Edwards strangled her 10-week-old Tavaris Michael Edwards on Christmas Day 2014. He died two days later at a Denver hospital after being taken off life support, prosecutors said.

Edwards told police she hit her son on the back of the head and strangled him because he was crying. Edwards had been scheduled to appear before District Judge Mary Jane Knisely Thursday for a hearing seeking to suppress that statement to police but instead entered the plea agreement.

Edwards’ attorney, Steven Scott, presented the court with hundreds of pages of literature about postpartum depression and information about Edwards’ mental health history.

A sentencing date will be set after a pre-sentence investigation.

The twins’ father, Brandon Edwards, has pleaded not guilty to three assault charges. His trial is scheduled for August.

Both have been jailed since their arrests on Dec. 26.
