CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - A Colorado oil company has begun drilling test wells in key sage grouse habitat near Battle Mountain after years-long resistance from local landowners and environmentalists.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1HeyZvK ) that GRMR Oil and Gas began drilling the first of three wells Sunday in the south-central area of Wyoming.

Earlier negotiations between GRMR and state officials resulted in the company agreeing to space one well per 640 acres and other provisions according to the state’s conversation plan.

The Sage Grouse Implementation Team, a group comprised of industry members, conservation groups and government agencies, says GRMR has been working with them “to do the right thing.”

Local ranchers still worry that development in the area could do further harm to the sage grouse population, which has significantly declined in recent decades.
