NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Two historically significant European tall ships are in southern New England and are open to the public for tours.

The French Navy Frigate L’Hermione (lair-me-OWN’) arrived at Fort Adams in Newport, Rhode Island and the N.R.P Sagres, a Portuguese educational training vessel, sailed into New Bedford, Massachusetts, both on Wednesday.

The L’Hermione is a handcrafted replica of the one Marquis Lafayette sailed from France to the U.S. in the 1700s to bring aid.

The N.R.P. Sagres helps connect Portuguese people with their homeland.

New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell tells WLNE-TV that the Whaling City has numerous relationships with Portugal and that visits like this help strengthen those bonds.
