SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois General Assembly has approved restricting severance packages for prematurely departing community college employees to no more than a year’s pay and benefits.

The legislation now goes to the governor. It arose from the payment of $763,000 by the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn to end then-president Robert Breuder’s contract three years early. It also limits the length of contracts to three years.

Republican state Rep. Jeanne Ives (JEE’-nee YVZ’) of Wheaton sponsored the legislation. It was met by derision from Democrats who claimed the GOP was reversing course on one of its strongly held beliefs - that local governments should be able to operate without interference from Springfield.

The measure was approved 73-34.
