HOUSTON (AP) - Houston police say a man sought in the fatal shooting of his estranged wife has been captured in northern Mexico.

Police on Thursday announced the arrest of 42-year-old Aaron Leach-Veliz on a murder warrant. He was arrested Wednesday night in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, across the border from Laredo.

Leach-Veliz faces extradition over the death of 44-year-old Armandina Leach. They were in the process of divorcing when Leach was ambushed July 1 while dropping off their son at her spouse’s home. Leach died the next day at a hospital.

Investigators say the attacker was hiding in some bushes and ran following the gunfire. Police immediately began searching for Leach-Veliz and suspected he might flee to Mexico.

Authorities did not immediately provide information on an attorney to speak on behalf of Leach-Veliz.

This story has been corrected to show police initially said the suspect was arrested Tuesday, but later said the arrest happened Wednesday.
