SANFORD, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina authorities say a motorist is dead hours after being charged with felonies in an accident in which a woman died falling from a boat he was towing.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said 29-year-old Anthony James Pantano shot and killed himself Thursday afternoon when two troopers arrived at his Sanford home to arrest him.

Pantano faced hit and run and DWI charges after the death of 20-year-old Allison Elizabeth Bennett of Fort Bragg.

Troopers say Pantano was driving a pickup truck and towing a ski boat with several passengers sitting inside through a Harnett County golf community on Tuesday. The boat trailer bounced and Bennett was ejected, fell onto the road and run over.

Troopers say Pantano stopped, then fled the scene.
