BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo has directed the state Department of Transportation to immediately lower the speed limit and install protective guard rails along a section of expressway that passes through a Buffalo park after a child was killed there.

Police in Buffalo say a car veered off State Route 198 at noontime Saturday and struck two children walking with their mother in Delaware Park. A 3-year-old boy was killed and his 5-year-old sister was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police say the driver is cooperating with the investigation. Names haven’t been released yet.

On Sunday, Cuomo directed DOT to lower the speed limit on that section of highway to 30 mph, install messaging boards and install “park-appropriate” guard rails to protect pedestrians.

Cuomo said the department was investigating long-term solutions to prevent further tragedies.
