BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) - A defamation lawsuit targets a former Biddeford detective who said he believed a sexual abuse investigation of a police officer was “thrown under the rug.”

WTMW-TV (https://bit.ly/1RG7iTB ) reported Monday that the lawsuit claims Terry Davis made false statements that caused harm to former police Capt. Norman Gaudette by discrediting the criminal investigation that exonerated him decades ago. Davis responded by saying he “would love to end up in a courtroom with Norman Gaudette.”

During public meetings at least two men have leveled accusations that Gaudette sexually abused them as teenagers in the 1980s. But the lawsuit doesn’t name them.

Gaudette’s lawyer, Gene Libby, is also representing retired Biddeford police Sgt. Stephen Dodd, who also has been accused of sexual abuse. Libby has described the accusations as “mob justice.”
